McLaren Vale
South Australia's flagship premium wine region, a patchwork of over 80 cellar doors set between the Mount Lofty Ranges and the Gulf St Vincent coastline.
A globally celebrated wine region
McLaren Vale is one of the oldest wine regions in Australia, with vines first planted in 1838. The region is renowned for its Shiraz, Grenache and increasingly its Italian and Iberian varietals - a reflection of its warm Mediterranean climate and remarkably diverse geology.
Over 80 cellar doors are scattered across the rolling hills, from grand estate wineries to tiny family-run vignerons. The region is also Australia's first certified-sustainable wine region.
Beyond the vines
McLaren Vale is also home to fine dining restaurants, olive groves, almond farms, artisan cheesemakers and the famous Shiraz Trail bike path. The town of McLaren Vale itself sits at the heart of it all, a short drive from Adelaide and within walking distance of several of the region's best cellar doors.

What is McLaren Vale known for?
McLaren Vale is one of Australia's oldest and most celebrated wine regions and the birthplace of South Australia's wine industry. How far is McLaren Vale from Adelaide?
McLaren Vale is about 35 km south of the Adelaide CBD, roughly a 45-minute drive, which makes it one of the most accessible wine regions in the country for a day trip.
What wine is McLaren Vale famous for?
Shiraz and Grenache are the signature wines, grown in a warm maritime climate that gives them their ripe, full-bodied style. You will also find excellent Cabernet Sauvignon and a growing range of Mediterranean varieties such as Vermentino, Fiano and Nero d'Avola.
How many days do you need in McLaren Vale?
A day trip is enough to visit three or four cellar doors and a long lunch, but a weekend lets you slow down, mix wineries with the beach, ride the Shiraz Trail and explore the smaller makers open by appointment. Most visitors find two days the sweet spot.
What is there to do in McLaren Vale besides wine?
Plenty. The region has olive groves and almond farms, artisan cheese and chocolate makers, the flat and family-friendly Shiraz Trail bike path, the beaches at Port Willunga and Aldinga a short drive away, and the heritage town of Willunga with its Saturday farmers market.
