Victor Harbor
The maritime heart of the south coast - home to southern right whales, Granite Island, the iconic horse-drawn tram and the Encounter Coast.
An Encounter Coast icon
Victor Harbor, set on the shore of Encounter Bay, takes its name from the 1802 meeting between French explorer Nicolas Baudin and British captain Matthew Flinders. Today it is the largest town on the Fleurieu and a magnet for families, whale watchers and weekenders.
Granite Island & the horse tram
A causeway (and a heritage horse-drawn tram built in 1894) links Victor Harbor to Granite Island, a small rocky reserve that is home to a colony of little penguins and spectacular coastal walks.
Southern right whales
Between May and October, southern right whales cruise Encounter Bay to calve and mate. The SA Whale Centre, on the Victor Harbor foreshore, runs an excellent interpretive gallery.
