Mount Breckan

A heritage 1881 stone mansion above Victor Harbor designed by William McMinn, set on landscaped gardens with elevated views across Encounter Bay.

A 19th-century mansion

Mount Breckan is one of the most distinctive heritage buildings on the Fleurieu Peninsula - a substantial bluestone mansion completed in 1881, designed by Adelaide architect William McMinn for Alexander Hay, a wealthy South Australian pastoralist. The house sits on a hilltop above the western Victor Harbor township with sweeping views across Encounter Bay.

State Heritage

The building is on the South Australian State Heritage Register and is one of the more prominent examples of late-Victorian residential architecture in regional South Australia. The grounds include extensive gardens with mature trees and stonework retaining walls.

Visiting

Mount Breckan is a private property and is not generally open to the public for casual visits, but the building is occasionally open for heritage open days, weddings and special events. The view of the building from the surrounding streets is the main public-facing aspect.
