Privacy Policy

Plain-language summary: we don't sell your data, we don't run advertising, and we collect the bare minimum needed to keep the site running and useful. Below is the detail.
What we collect automatically
When you visit a page on this site, our server records the page URL, the time, and a few anonymous details about your browser (device type, browser, operating system, screen size). We also record the referring URL where applicable. This is used to understand which pages are popular, how the site is used, and which content needs improving.
We do not use third-party tracking cookies. We do not load Google Analytics, Facebook Pixel, or similar trackers by default. The pageview log is stored on our own server and never shared with third parties.
Bots and crawlers are filtered out of our analytics so the data reflects real visitors.
What we store in your browser
We use your browser's local storage (not cookies) for two features:
- Saved places - a list of locations you have starred, kept on your device only.
- Trip itinerary - the places you have added to your trip, also kept on your device only.
Both are stored locally in your browser and never transmitted to our server. Clearing your browser's local storage will clear them.
Contact form submissions
If you send us a message via the contact form, we store your name, email, message and the time of submission so that we can reply to you. Submissions are kept for up to 12 months, then deleted. We do not add you to any mailing list unless you separately sign up for the newsletter.
Newsletter
If you sign up for the newsletter, we store your email address so that we can send you occasional updates. You can unsubscribe at any time and we will delete your record.
Third-party services we load
A few third parties supply parts of the site:
- OpenStreetMap serves the map tiles. When you load a page with a map, your IP address is shared with OpenStreetMap.
- Open-Meteo supplies weather forecasts. Region coordinates are shared but no personal data is sent.
- Wikimedia Commons hosts the source pages for some images credited on the site.
- Bunny Fonts serves the typefaces. Bunny Fonts is privacy-respecting and does not track or log visitors.
Children
This site is a travel guide aimed at adults planning trips. It is not intended for children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect data from anyone under that age.
Your rights
Under Australian privacy law you have the right to ask what we store about you, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it. Contact us via the contact form with the subject "Privacy request" and we will respond within a reasonable time.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as the site evolves. The "Last updated" date at the top will reflect the most recent change. Material changes will be flagged on the home page for at least a week.
