Hindmarsh Falls

A 20-metre cascade in the hills above Victor Harbor

A short, easy walk leads to a lookout over a roughly 20-metre cascade on the Hindmarsh River, tucked into a quiet recreation reserve north of Victor Harbor.

A hidden cascade in the Hindmarsh Tiers

Hindmarsh Falls sits in the Hindmarsh Falls Recreation Reserve, off Hindmarsh Tiers Road north of Victor Harbor. The Hindmarsh River drops roughly 20 to 25 metres over a series of cascades into a fern-fringed gully, easily seen from a viewing platform at the end of a short sealed path. From the top carpark it is only about 150 metres of walking with steps and a handrail down to the lookout, while the lower picnic ground offers a longer 600-metre amble through the riverside reserve.

Picnics and birdwatching

The grassed picnic area along the riverbank is shaded by mature eucalypts and is a popular birdwatching spot for scrub wrens, kookaburras and treecreepers. There is no entry fee and the reserve is managed by the City of Victor Harbor.

When to visit

The falls are at their most photogenic in winter and spring after solid rainfall, when the full curtain of water comes alive. By late summer the flow can reduce to a trickle, so plan a visit between June and October for the best show.
