Cape Jervis
The southern tip of the Fleurieu - windswept cliffs, historic lighthouse, and the ferry terminal to Kangaroo Island.
The end of the peninsula
Cape Jervis sits at the very southern tip of the Fleurieu Peninsula, where the ranges drop dramatically into Backstairs Passage. It is best known as the mainland departure point for the SeaLink ferry to Kangaroo Island, a crossing of about 45 minutes, but the headland rewards anyone who lingers. The Cape Jervis Lighthouse, first lit in 1871 and replaced by an automatic tower in 1972, still marks the spot where the mainland runs out.
Coast, trails and small communities
This is wild, walking country. The Heysen Trail begins at the Cape Jervis trailhead and runs around 1,200 kilometres north to the Flinders Ranges, while nearby Deep Creek National Park offers steep coastal hikes down to Blowhole Beach. Inland, the tiny locality of Delamere holds the general store, the historic Uniting Church, the community art wall and the old Bullaparinga Cemetery.
On the water
Fishing runs deep here. The jetty, boat ramp and Fishery Beach, named for early whaling, draw anglers, while charter operators head out across the passage. Down the coast, Rapid Bay and its jetty are a short drive away. Stay at the caravan park or holiday units, and call into the tavern.

The lighthouse keepers of Cape Jervis
The original Cape Jervis lighthouse was built in 1871 on the windswept headland where the mainland runs out. For a hundred years it was kept by families whose lives ran to the rhythm of the Backstairs Passage weather. The keeper logs read like a soap opera.
