Cape Jervis

The southern tip of the Fleurieu - windswept cliffs, historic lighthouse, and the ferry terminal to Kangaroo Island.

The end of the peninsula

Cape Jervis sits at the very southern tip of the Fleurieu Peninsula, where the ranges drop dramatically into Backstairs Passage. It is best known as the mainland departure point for the SeaLink ferry to Kangaroo Island, a crossing of about 45 minutes, but the headland rewards anyone who lingers. The Cape Jervis Lighthouse, first lit in 1871 and replaced by an automatic tower in 1972, still marks the spot where the mainland runs out.

Coast, trails and small communities

This is wild, walking country. The Heysen Trail begins at the Cape Jervis trailhead and runs around 1,200 kilometres north to the Flinders Ranges, while nearby Deep Creek National Park offers steep coastal hikes down to Blowhole Beach. Inland, the tiny locality of Delamere holds the general store, the historic Uniting Church, the community art wall and the old Bullaparinga Cemetery.

On the water

Fishing runs deep here. The jetty, boat ramp and Fishery Beach, named for early whaling, draw anglers, while charter operators head out across the passage. Down the coast, Rapid Bay and its jetty are a short drive away. Stay at the caravan park or holiday units, and call into the tavern.

Visiting Cape Jervis - frequently asked questions

What is Cape Jervis known for?

Cape Jervis is best known as the mainland departure point for the SeaLink vehicle and passenger ferry to Kangaroo Island, which crosses Backstairs Passage in about 45 minutes. It is also the southern starting point of the Heysen Trail and a popular base for coastal fishing and bushwalking.

How far is Cape Jervis from Adelaide?

Cape Jervis is roughly 105 to 110 kilometres south of Adelaide, around a 90-minute drive via the Fleurieu Peninsula. The route passes through Yankalilla and Delamere before reaching the headland at the peninsula's tip.

What is there to do in Cape Jervis besides catching the ferry?

Visitors can walk the start of the Heysen Trail, explore neighbouring Deep Creek National Park and its trail down to Blowhole Beach, and see the historic Cape Jervis Lighthouse. The jetty, boat ramp and Fishery Beach make it a strong spot for fishing, with charter operators running trips along the coast.

When is the best time to visit Cape Jervis?

Spring and autumn are ideal, with milder temperatures for walking the exposed coastal trails and calmer conditions on the water. Summer is busiest as ferry and holiday traffic peaks, while winter brings dramatic seas and a quieter, wind-swept feel to the headland.

Can you visit Rapid Bay and its jetty near Cape Jervis?

Yes. Rapid Bay lies a short drive from Cape Jervis, reached by a descending sealed road from near Delamere, and is well known for its jetty. It is a popular spot for shore diving, snorkelling and fishing, set beneath striking limestone cliffs, and divers often come hoping to see leafy sea dragons.
