A Mediterranean-leaning seafood restaurant perched on the Encounter Bay clifftop with panoramic ocean views, a heritage two-storey building and a long-standing reputation.

On the clifftop

The Whalers Inn occupies a heritage two-storey stone building on a clifftop section of Franklin Parade in Encounter Bay, with one of the most spectacular ocean view dining rooms on the south coast. The building looks out across Encounter Bay, the Bluff and Wright Island.

What's on the plate

The kitchen leans Mediterranean - lots of seafood, lemon, herbs, slow-cooked meats. The wine list runs deep on Fleurieu producers. A short bar menu is available without a booking.

When to come

Lunch in winter when the whales are in the bay is the signature experience - the dining room sits high enough above the water that you can sometimes spot southern rights from your table.
