Kings Beach

A hidden beach at the foot of the Waitpinga Cliffs

A small, hidden beach framed by dramatic sandstone cliffs in Newland Head Conservation Park - reached by a short walking track from the carpark.

A secret of the south coast

Kings Beach is a small, crescent-shaped beach tucked at the foot of the dramatic sandstone cliffs of Newland Head Conservation Park, about 25 minutes south of Victor Harbor. It is a hidden corner of the Fleurieu Peninsula and one of the quietest beaches on the south coast - often you will have it to yourself.

Getting there

From Victor Harbor, drive along Waitpinga Road and turn onto Kings Beach Road, which ends at a clifftop carpark. From there, a short walking track descends to the beach (about 10 minutes each way, steep in places, with some stairs). The carpark itself is a superb whale-watching lookout in winter.

What to do

  • Whale watching - from May to October, southern right whales pass through the bay and the clifftop carpark is one of the best vantage points on the Fleurieu
  • Rockpooling - the reefs at either end of the beach expose at low tide
  • Photography - the sea cliffs and sandstone layers are spectacular in late afternoon light
  • The Heysen Trail - the Waitpinga Cliffs section of the Heysen Trail passes along the clifftops above the beach

Safety

There are powerful rips and no lifeguards - Kings Beach is not a safe swimming beach. Stay well back from the edge of the cliffs and take all rubbish with you.
