A samphire estuarine wetland on Matthew Flinders Drive at Encounter Bay, with a sealed walking path, shaded shelters, fish nursery and rich birdlife.

A wetland on the edge of town

The Encounter Wetlands Reserve sits on Matthew Flinders Drive between Encounter Bay and Victor Harbor, in a low-lying samphire flat that the Hindmarsh River drains into. It is a constructed wetland system that doubles as a fish nursery and a stormwater filter.

What you'll see

Waterbirds - ducks, swans, egrets, herons, ibis - are reliable here, and the wetland is a stop for migratory waders. The samphire flats and the surrounding reed beds make for distinctive coastal scenery.

Walking

A flat sealed path runs around the wetland with shaded shelters and interpretive signs. Suitable for prams and wheelchairs.
