Kayak tours into the Coorong wetlands

Guided kayak tours from Hindmarsh Island into the Coorong National Park - a Ramsar-listed wetland system of lagoons, sand dunes and waterbirds.

A paddle into a living landscape

Canoe the Coorong runs small-group guided kayak tours from Hindmarsh Island into the northern end of the Coorong National Park. The Coorong is a Ramsar-listed wetland of international importance - a narrow, 130km-long lagoon system separated from the Southern Ocean by the Younghusband Peninsula, with vast populations of pelicans, swans, spoonbills and migratory shorebirds.

Tour options

  • Coorong Sunset Paddle - a 2-hour evening tour across the mouth of the Murray to watch the sun set behind the dunes
  • Rivers End Explorer - a half-day paddle to the Murray Mouth and the point where the river meets the sea
  • Full-day Coorong tour - a longer paddle that crosses to the Younghusband Peninsula for a walk across the dunes to a wild southern-ocean beach
  • Overnight camps - multi-day expeditions into the remote southern lagoons for experienced paddlers

Practical info

  • Departs from Bongalong Road, Hindmarsh Island (about 10 minutes drive from Goolwa over the Hindmarsh Island Bridge)
  • No kayaking experience required for the shorter tours - kayaks, paddles, dry bags and safety gear are provided
  • Tours run year-round; the best birdlife is from September to March
  • Bookings essential
