A dark-sky astronomy site run by the Astronomical Society of South Australia, with public observing nights in the rural Tooperang hamlet.

Dark skies above Tooperang

The Tooperang Observing Site is a dedicated dark-sky observation facility operated by the Astronomical Society of South Australia (ASSA), located in the small rural settlement of Tooperang east of Mount Compass. The location was chosen for its unusually dark skies - far enough from Adelaide to escape the light dome but close enough for an evening visit.

Public nights

ASSA hosts regular public observing nights at the site through the year, where members set up multiple telescopes for visitors to look through and walk visitors through the night sky. Bookings essential - check the ASSA website for upcoming dates.
