A historic township once considered by William Light as the capital of South Australia, with a Lions Park picnic area beside the spring-fed creek and an 1913 Institute building.

The town that almost was the capital

Currency Creek is one of the more historically significant small townships in South Australia. In 1836, when Colonel William Light was searching for a site for the colonial capital, Currency Creek was on his shortlist. He ultimately chose Adelaide instead, but Currency Creek retains a quiet importance from that early survey period.

What's there now

A small village set among rolling vineyards and creek country east of Goolwa. The Lions Park beside the spring-fed creek is the heart of the village - picnic tables, BBQs, a quiet swimming hole. The 1913 Institute building still stands on the main road and the surrounding wine district has the rest of the action.
