Knights Beach sits on the eastern edge of Port Elliot's headlands and is rated among the top bodyboarding breaks in the world when a south-southeast swell is running. On smaller days it offers a safer family swim than neighbouring Boomer Beach.
A famous Fleurieu surf break
Knights is an exposed beach and reef break tucked between the headlands east of Horseshoe Bay. When a south-southeast groundswell lines up with a northerly offshore wind it produces hollow, powerful waves that have earned Knights a place on several lists of the world's top ten bodyboarding beaches.
What visitors do
Surfers, bodyboarders and spectators dominate the beach on bigger days. When the swell drops, Knights becomes a relatively sheltered swim compared with the heaving rip bowl next door at Boomer. The beach is a stop on the Harbourmasters Walking Trail, so many visitors simply pause here to watch the surfers rather than enter the water.
Practical notes
A small free car park sits at the top of the dune, with a path down to the sand. There are public toilets nearby and no lifeguard patrol, so judge conditions carefully before swimming. Dogs are allowed on-lead outside summer peak hours. The cliff lookout just above Knights is a great spot to watch the action without getting wet.
