Horseshoe Bay

Port Elliot's sheltered family cove

A near-perfect horseshoe of sandy beach framed by sandstone headlands at Port Elliot, one of the safest swimming beaches on the Encounter Coast.

A sheltered swimming cove

Horseshoe Bay at Port Elliot is a classic, near-perfect horseshoe of sandy beach framed on both sides by sandstone headlands. The bay is sheltered from most swells, making it one of the safest swimming beaches on the otherwise rugged Encounter Coast and a long-time favourite family destination.

What to do

  • Swimming and shallow wading
  • Rock pools on both headlands at low tide
  • Walking to Freemans Nob, the rocky point to the east with views back across the bay
  • Clifftop walks to Commodore Point
  • Coffee, ice-cream and fish and chips at the cafes on The Strand just above the beach
