Freeman Lookout and Obelisk
Whaler's lookout with the best view of Horseshoe Bay
At the end of The Strand, the restored Freeman Lookout perches above Horseshoe Bay on a headland that whalers used as a spotting post in the 1830s. One of the Fleurieu's best whale-watching vantage points in winter.
A two-century-old lookout
Known historically as Freemans Nob or Freemans Knob, this grassy headland at the southern end of The Strand was the shore-based whaling lookout for Encounter Bay's early whaling stations in the late 1830s. The bluestone obelisk on top was later erected as a navigation marker. The lookout underwent a major restoration in 2023 to fix drainage and preserve the original heritage staircase.
What visitors do
This is pure sit-and-stare territory. On a clear day the view stretches from Horseshoe Bay right around to Granite Island and Victor Harbor. Between May and October, southern right whales migrate through Encounter Bay and can often be spotted breaching from the lookout. Dolphins, seals and sea eagles are year-round regulars. The Harbourmasters Walking Trail loops past here.
Practical notes
Free to visit, open 24 hours, with a small free car park at the top of The Strand. A short paved path and steps lead to the obelisk; the main viewing area is accessible. Bring binoculars in whale season and a windbreaker even on sunny days - it catches the full sou'westerly.
