SteamRanger Cockle Train
Heritage steam trains along the coast since 1887
The historic Cockle Train follows the coast from Goolwa to Victor Harbor on tracks laid in 1887, run by SteamRanger Heritage Railway.
Australia's oldest public railway
The line the Cockle Train runs on was Australia's first public railway, built in 1854 to carry goods from the Murray River port at Goolwa to the sea at Victor Harbor. Passenger trains have been affectionately called "The Cockle Train" since 1887 because of the cockle beaches along the route.
Riding the Cockle Train
Today SteamRanger Heritage Railway operates heritage diesel and steam trains between Goolwa, Port Elliot and Victor Harbor every Sunday, Wednesday and through most school holidays. The one-hour ride passes limestone cliffs, ocean views and river crossings. Tickets are available on the day at the station.
