Sellicks Beach

A long sweep of sand below the cliffs

A wide, family-friendly drive-on beach at the southern end of the metropolitan coast, famous for its cliff-backed sands and clifftop sunsets over Gulf St Vincent.

The Fleurieu's drive-on beach

Sellicks Beach is one of only a handful of beaches in South Australia where you can legally drive a car onto the sand, and it is by far the easiest to reach from Adelaide. The wide, hard-packed beach stretches for several kilometres below dramatic ochre cliffs, with calm, clear water that makes it a favourite for families, swimmers, kite-flyers and beach cricket.

What to do here

Most visitors come simply to set up for the day on the sand - beach umbrellas, eskies and chairs included. The southern end below the cliffs is the most photogenic, especially around sunset when the rock face glows orange. Surfers find small beach breaks at either end, while the long flat sand is ideal for jogging, kite-buggies and learner-friendly stand-up paddling on calm days. The clifftop lookout on Esplanade is a must-stop on the drive in.

Driving on the sand

Vehicle access is via the ramp at the end of Esplanade. Driving on the beach is free for City of Onkaparinga residents; non-residents pay a small daily beach pass fee, payable through the Onkaparinga Council. Take care on soft sand near the high-tide line, watch the tides and drive slowly - pedestrians and children share the beach. Dogs are welcome on lead.
